FORT BEND COUNTY

The COMMISSIONERS COURT is composed of four Commissioners and the County Judge who are responsible for maintaining county roads and bridges, a courthouse and jail, and administering the county health and welfare system. In addition, the Commissioners Court is empowered to adopt the county budget and provide additional optional services allowed by state law.

The COUNTY JUDGE is elected countywide. In Ft. Bend county the County Judge devotes most, if not all, his time to county business and leaves the work of trying cases to county courts at law. He presides over the Commissioners Court.

COUNTY COURTS AT LAW try criminal cases involving Class A and Class B misdemeanors and civil disputes in which the amount at stake is between $500 and $100,000. County Courts also probate wills, appoint guardians for minors, and conduct mental health/competency hearings. Election Year 2008
