The Court is the final authority in all criminal law cases brought in Texas; it hears appeals that have been heard by one of the courts of Appeals, and hears automatic death-penalty cases directly from the District Courts. Judges are elected for six-year terms.

The Court (along with other Courts of Appeals) determines whether the trial court has complied with the law in the conduct of the trial. Judges are elected for six-year terms.
