Voter Registration
To vote, you must register in your county of residence. Voter registration must be submitted at least 30 days prior to an election, in order to vote in that election.
Qualifications
- Citizen of the United States
- Resident of the County
- 18 years of age on the day of the election
- Must not have been declared mentally incompetent by a court
- Must not have been convicted of a felony (or, if convicted, have received a certificate of discharge or have been pardoned)
Note: Each voter registration application states that “...giving false information to procure a voter registration is perjury, and a crime under state and federal law.”

In Texas, one does not register acording to political party. The Democrat or Republican stamp is applied to your Registration Certificate only when you vote in a primary election to prevent people from voting in both party primaries.
Voter Registration is permanent
Every two (2) years a new registration certificate will be mailed to you. If you move within the county, you must transfer your registration to your new address by calling 713-368-2200 or write your new address on the back of your voter registration certificate and send it to the Tax Assessor-Collector’s Office. You may vote a full ballot at your previous precinct if your registration has not become effective in your new precinct.
If you have LOST YOUR VOTER REGISTRATION CERTIFICATE, you may obtain a replacement certificate from the Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector’s office, 713-368-2200.
COLLEGE STUDENTS may register and vote in either their “hometown” county or in the county of their college community—whichever they declare as their PERMANENT residence on their voter registration application.
Voting Information
On election day, each voter MUST VOTE IN THE PRECINCT OF RESIDENCE designated on his/her Voter Registration Certificate, which also shows five basic district numbers. Precinct lists giving polling locations are printed in the newspapers immediately before an election and can be obtained by calling the automated system at the County Clerk’s office, 713-755-6965.

Registro de Electores

En Texas, la persona no se registra según su partido político. El sello del Partido Demócrata o Republicano es colocado en su Certificado de Registro Electoral únicamente cuando usted vote en las elecciones primarias, esto previene que las personas puedan votar en las primarias de ambos partidos.
El Registro de Elector es Permanente
Cada dos (2) años se le enviará por correo un certificado de su registro. Si se cambia de dirección dentro del mismo condado, usted debe cambiar su registro a la nueva dirección llamando al 713-368-2200 ó escriba su nueva dirección en la parte de atrás de su tarjeta del registro para votar y enviéla a la oficina del cobro de impuestos del condado de Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector . Usted puede votar una boleta completa en su precinto anterior si su registro no ha se ha llevado a electo en su nuevo precinto.
Si usted EXTRAVIÓ SU CERTIFICADO DE REGISTRO ELECTORAL, usted puede obtener un duplicado de la oficina del Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector llamando al 713-368-2200.
LOS ESTUDIANTES UNIVERSITARIOS pueden registrarse y votar en ya sea su condado de “origen” o en el condado de su universidad, en cualquiera que designen como su residencia PERMANENTE en la solicitud de registro de electorction and can be obtained by calling the automated system at the County Clerk’s office, 713-755-6965.
