ABOUT THE LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS OF HOUSTON
The League of Women Voters of the Houston Area is a non-partisan political organization which works to promote civic responsibility through informed and active participation in government. The League does not support or oppose any political party or candidate.
The League of Women Voters in Houston is comprised of two separate entities: LWV-Houston and the LWV- Houston Education Fund. Each of these sister civic organizations has its own structure, tax status and objectives.
Our History
The League of Women Voters of the United States and the League of Women Voters of the Houston Area were both established in 1920, the year that the nineteenth amendment to the Constitution of the United States gave women the right to vote. The League of Women Voters is a direct descendant of the women’s suffrage movement, repositioning an active and effective organization to henceforth serve all voters.
The League continues as a grassroots organization working at the national, state, and local levels. Membership in the League of Women Voters of the Houston Area includes membership in our state League (LWV TX) and in the national League (LWV US).
