ABOUT THE LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS OF THE HOUSTON AREA

ACTION AND ADVOCACY
League members study issues relevant to public policy and interest, take consensus and form positions. Once a position is adopted, LWV HA members:

  • Lobby elected officials at local, state, and national levels of government
  • Form coalitions with other organizations and groups
  • Testify before public entities
  • Issue statements to the press on League positions
OUR NATIONAL POSITIONS

The League of Women Voters studies issues related to Government, Natural Resources, International Relations and Social Policy. The League takes action only under existing program positions, which are reached through membership study and consensus.

The League of Women Voters of the Houston Area acts under national positions, state positions and local positions.

GOVERNMENT

Promote an open governmental system that is representative, accountable and responsive. Read more.

SOCIAL POLICY

Secure equal rights and equal opportunity for all. Promote social and economic justice and the health and safety of all Americans. Read more.

NATURAL RESOURCES

Promote an environment beneficial to life through the protection and wise management of natural resources in the public interest. Read more.

INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

Promote peace in an interdependent world by working cooperatively with other nations and strengthening international organizations. Read more.

OUR STATE AND LOCAL POSITIONS

Our local positions are quite extensive. They can be found in detail on pp. 18–28 in our Annual Meeting Workbook. Recent actions under our local positions include:

  • Study of our current City of Houston budget
  • A TV program on human trafficking
  • Working with the LWV-US to keep EPA strong and to keep Congress from lowering our clean air standards
  • Working with the County of Harris to extend early voting hours.
