During National Voter Registration Week, LWV Houston is rallying our community to register 1,400 Houstonians. Every shift, every pop-up, every signature gets us closer. Be part of the count!

Why a Week, Not Just a Day?

National Voter Registration Day, is the nation’s largest nonpartisan civic holiday dedicated to empowering voters. But here in Houston, one day isn’t enough. That’s why LWV Houston celebrates
National Voter Registration Week.

All week long, our goal is simple: help as many eligible Houstonians as possible get registered and #VoteReady for the next election.

This effort is only possible thanks to the collective power of volunteers, nonprofits, businesses, schools, libraries, election officials, and community partners, people just like you who make up Houston’s voter-ready coalition.

The History of National Voter Registration Day

What began as National Voter Registration Day in 2012 has grown into the nation’s largest non-partisan civic holiday dedicated to helping every eligible American get registered and ready to vote.

Each September, thousands of partners, from Fortune 500 companies to neighborhood food banks, schools, and public libraries, come together for a one-day, nationwide democracy blitz. Through pop-up events, digital campaigns, and media outreach, they create broad awareness of voter registration opportunities.

Why it matters:

Every year, millions of Americans miss their chance to vote because they forget to update their registration, miss a deadline, or are unsure how to register. National Voter Registration Day was designed to change that, making sure no one who wants to cast a ballot is held back by an easily fixed paperwork issue.

Over time, the mission has expanded. Today, the holiday also focuses on helping voters become truly VoteReady: understanding deadlines, knowing their ballot options, and feeling confident about how to participate. Since its launch, the impact has been massive. More than 5 million Americans have registered on National Voter Registration Day, including 1.5 million in 2020 alone.

Here in Houston, we’ve built on that tradition by celebrating a full National Voter Registration Week—because one day just isn’t enough for a city as big and diverse as ours.
